Episode 4: Evi O

In episode four of season two, I chat with Evi O, award-winning book designer and self-taught artist. Originally from Indonesia, Evi cut her teeth in design in the Sydney food publishing world, gaining a reputation for her clean-cut aesthetic, and balanced designs. She creates the kind of work that makes you smile and it’s this sense of ease and joy that she brings to her personal style, preferring effortless pieces in paired back colour palettes.

I was always cheeky. I was always stubborn. I was 3 years old and I was putting on a hunger strike because Mum wouldn’t let me wear jeans, she wanted me to in a dress and I was like ‘nuh, I’m not going to eat, I’m not going to move.

Styling

Tailoring to Evi’s easygoing style, I’ve kept things simple, styling her in some good old faithfuls like a white t-shirt, track pants and her own bomber jacket. By adding a silver chain necklace Ive kept her look a little street while adding a touch of my own shine.

Full Outfit: P.E Nation Track Pants, vintage silver chain necklace.

A selection of vintage pieces from my collection, inspired by Evi’s shoot.

Nailing simplicity is actually very complex... sometimes my art looks lazy but there’s a lot of thoughts and process going through it that perhaps I don’t want people to know because I just want to present the final piece and if it makes you laugh, smile or happy, I guess my work is done.
